The Frontier Development Program for Genome Editing

Activity

Hiroshima University's Program for World-leading Innovative & Smart Education × OPERA Genome Editing Industry-Academia Collaboration Consortium - Kickoff Symposium was held at Nihonbashi Life Science Hub in Tokyo on December 10, 2018. Approximately 150 people from organizations related to this program, partner companies of this Consortium, and other companies participated.

This symposium was intended to disseminate information to the public on a new Hiroshima University program that provides opportunities for the world's highest level of education and research, is centered on genome editing research (which is the strength of Hiroshima University) and is provided through partnerships with domestic and overseas universities, research institutes, and the industry.

In the opening address, President Ochi of Hiroshima University, said "Genome editing is also attracting attention from the government as a research field that can create innovation. I expect that Hiroshima University will become a key player that aims to be one of the world's top 100 universities."

After the opening address, invited speakers with various areas of expertise gave lectures and presented their studies. Takashi Yamamoto, the Program Coordinator and Professor of the Hiroshima University Graduate School of Science, said "Genome editing will be needed in a variety of areas. It is important to industrialize genome editing technologies in Japan to keep up with the world. I hope we can develop people who can create new industries."

A social gathering was held after the symposium and the audiences and speakers discussed the lectures and presentations with each other. It was a good opportunity for them to further understand the program.
