The Frontier Development Program for Genome Editing

On April 5, 2019, the opening ceremony of the Frontier Development Program for Genome Editing was held for the newly enrolled students.

The ceremony opened with a welcome speech by Dr. Yoshihisa Kawahara, the program director, who said, ″I advise you to exercise your willpower, be ambitious in your studies, and engage yourselves with the student community. I hope that, in the future, you will play active roles in the field of genome editing and make a contribution at the global stage by taking action and solving various issues in the society, thereby taking pride in what you have learned in this program. I welcome you all and wish you all the success in your academic endeavors.″

In this ceremony, all participants, including 12 new students and 19 program members, introduced themselves.

This program will provide students with opportunities to acquire the basic and applied knowledge of techniques in genome editing. Moreover, this program will enable students to master genome editing technology and connect it directly to industry, Therefore, this program will foster ″developers of industrial genome editing technologies,″ ″researchers in genome editing-based therapies and drug discovery,″ ″entrepreneurs of venture businesses related to genome editing,″ and ″developers of basic genome editing technology.″

*This program was selected for the 2018 WISE Program (Doctoral Program for World-leading Innovative & Smart Education) of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).
