The Frontier Development Program for Genome Editing

Activity

On Saturday, November 16th, 2024, the Frontier Development Program for Genome Editing at Hiroshima University held an online international seminar on "Front-line of Genome Editing Technology." More than 200 people registered, and Professor Thomas Gaj from the Department of Bioengineering and the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign was invited as a guest speaker. The seminar aimed to accelerate genome editing research, one of the strengths of Hiroshima University, and its associated studies in Japan.

Dr. Gaj's talk, entitled "Next-generation gene editing for neurodegenerative disorders," focused on the efforts of his laboratory to use highly versatile genome-modifying technologies and other emerging tools to develop targeted gene therapies for various neurodegenerative disorders, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a devastating disorder involving the loss of movement resulting from degenerating motor neurons. Following his talk, five students from the Frontier Development Program for Genome Editing gave presentations on their research projects.
