The Frontier Development Program for Genome Editing

Activity

On Saturday, November 22, 2025, we held the Genome Editing Innovation Seminar online. The seminar was organized under the theme "Current Status and Future Prospects of Genome Editing, " with the aim of disseminating research outcomes in the field of genome editing to the wider public and promoting social acceptance through the sharing of the latest developments. More than 80 participants joined the event.

The seminar began with a lecture by Mr. Ohta Hiroyuki , titled "Efforts Toward Useful Substance Production and Commercialization Using the high-oil-producing microalga Nannochloropsis " (provisional translation). He introduced a broad range of initiatives—from basic research on enhancing oil productivity and the social implementation of valuable lipids such as EPA, to the application of genome editing technologies and outdoor cultivation trials—illustrating the pathway from fundamental studies to commercialization.
Following this, three students enrolled in the program presented their research findings, engaging in active discussions during a lively Q&A session.
The final lecture was delivered by Ms. IIZUKA Rie, titled "Ethics and Society in Reproductive Medicine Technologies " (provisional translation). She reviewed the historical relationship between reproductive medicine and society and examined the bioethical considerations required for the use of genome editing. Her talk emphasized that the accumulation of past and present discussions serves as an important starting point for considering how society should engage with and coexist alongside emerging technologies.
