― What motivated you to join the Frontier Development Program for Genome Editing?
A few years before participating in this program, I was assigned to Hiroshima University for about six months to provide instruction on research using genome editing. I wanted to compile and publish our research findings to contribute them to society. However, the successful societal implementation of genome editing requires not only cutting-edge knowledge and technological advancements but also solutions to societal acceptance issues, such as safety and ethics. I decided to enroll in this program because it offers an excellent environment to learn about these issues and provides a network for discussion among industry, academia, governments, and the public.
― What did you learn from the internship?
I was dispatched to the Regional Fish Institute, Ltd., which utilizes genome editing to improve fish breeding and commercialize “smart” land-based aquaculture. I gained hands-on experience in genome editing and fish farming, which allowed me to grasp the challenges of the aquaculture industry. In discussions with researchers and back-office staff, I was able not only to deepen my research expertise but also to gain an understanding of entrepreneurship and the process of translating research into societal implementation. These experiences were stimulating in a way I do not typically encounter in my corporate life.
― How are you utilizing what you learned in the program?
By completing this program, I have acquired advanced knowledge and skills in genome editing that will be useful in developing technologies that can be implemented in society. I have also realized that discussions during research and practical work have strengthened my logical thinking skills and problem-finding and -solving abilities. These experiences are not only useful in conducting basic research at the company but also in developing products to identify problems that consumers may not even be aware of. Furthermore, the friends and networks I made through the program have greatly supported me.
― Please tell us about the career path you envisioned as a student and your current career.
As a university student, I wanted to become a researcher and create materials using microorganisms that would contribute to a sustainable society. Since joining the company, I have worked on the bioproduction of aromatic compounds, organic acids, proteins, and other substances. In my 17th year with the company, I was transferred from the production side of these materials to the side of their application. I am currently engaged in the development of highly functional laundry detergents. Over time, I have transitioned from conducting basic research on materials creation as a researcher to overseeing product development in a management role. Although this field is new to me, I approach my work daily with a fresh attitude, striving to contribute to society.
― What advice would you give to younger students?
This program provides a highly supportive environment with high-quality education. I encourage you to make the most of this opportunity and enjoy not only your research but also your daily student life to the fullest! Through this program, I hope you will gradually recognize your own growth and find motivation to strive toward your future goal. I would also like you to cherish the friendships and networks you built through the program, as they will indeed support you along the way.
